Reading and literacy is a major focus at Gila Vista. We know that sharp reading skills will enhance your child's future success in school. At the beginning of every school year, every Gila Vista student takes a Student Reading Inventory (SRI) to gauge his/her reading level. We do this to measure progress. At the end of each year, we graph the student's growth.

We participate in the Reading Counts program. In this program students read one book per week, and complete a reading comprehension test on that book.

We've made our library accessible to students based on their reading levels. We color-code books in the library to match each reading level. We strongly encourage parents/guardians to promote reading during non-school hours. Statistics show that students who read at, or above, their reading levels demonstrate growth during the year. Students who read below their level tend to stay at the same level, or decrease in skill.

During the summer months, please visit the public library to check out books. The public library does not color-code their books in the way Gila Vista's library has done. However, we've provided some reading lists for your student. We hope you find these helpful, both to the parent and the student, for help in improving reading abilities.

These lists indicate the books and their reading levels. We ask that each student know what color group he/she falls in, and highly recommend checking out books at his/her level.
